World War II veteran recalls co-piloting glider
Gene Menking, a retired chief master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force, became a nonflying crew chief for the service during World War II. Menking, now 89, also co-piloted a glider during paratrooper training. "A [big troop] glider had to be hand-flown, maintaining the glider’s position above the C-47 towing it," he said. Some Pan Am History

THIS IS FROM A RETIRED PAN AM STEWERDESS
Pan Am during WW-2:
They crouched in the excavation, watching the swarm of Japanese planes dive again and again on the nearby buildings, feeling the earth shake when the bombs exploded, ducking as debris and shrapnel rained down on them.
It was unreal. Only two hours earlier, as the seven-man crew of Pan Am's
Philippine Clipper, they had been on a routine flight to Guam.
Then came the unexpected message:
JAPANESE ATTACKING PEARL HARBOR ... RETURN TO WAKE AT ONCE ... CLIPPER NEEDED FOR PATROL DUTY.
Now they were watching with anger and frustration as Pan Am's Wake Island base was reduced to smoking rubble.
Suddenly a Japanese fighter spotted the big Martin 130 flying boat tied to
the dock. It was an easy target. Swooping down the plane opened fire,
raking the defenseless Clipper from nose to tail with machine gun bullets.
In five minutes it was all over. The Japanese left as abruptly as they
had come. Nine Pan Am base employees had been killed, all base facilities
destroyed. Hurriedly the crew rounded up the rest of the Pan Am personnel who had been stationed there and loaded them onto the Clipper. They knew the Japanese would be back Soon.
Riddled with 96 bullet holes, the crippled and overloaded Philippine
Clipper made two unsuccessful tries to take off, then on the third attempt managed to struggle into the air. Three days later, after stops at Midway and Honolulu, it was in San Francisco, where the crew gave one of the first eyewitness accounts of the Pacific War.
Another Clipper didn't escape. Anchored in Hong Kong harbor on December 7 (December 8 Honk Kong time), fueled for a flight to Manila, it was hit by incendiary bullets from attacking Japanese fighters, caught fire, and burned to the water line. The Hong Kong Clipper II had only been in Pacific service for seven weeks.
A third Pan Am flying boat, the Pacific Clipper out of San Francisco, was
on its way from New Caledonia to Auckland when it got the news of the
Japanese attack. Deciding against trying to make it back over an ocean
now patrolled by an enemy, it refueled in New Zealand and then headed
west. Following a route close to the equator, it flew across Australia,
India, the Middle East, across Africa and the South Atlantic, along the
northern coast of South America and then on to New York. On the morning of January 6th, a startled officer in the control tower of New York's La Guardia Airport heard on the loudspeaker: "Pacific Clipper, inbound from Auckland, New Zealand. Due to arrive Pan American Marine Terminal at La Guardia in seven minutes." The incredible month-long, 31,500-mile journey was the longest ever made by a commercial aircraft and the first around the world. The Pacific Clipper had flown over three oceans, made 18 stops in 12 different countries, and crossed the equator six times.
Pan Am's experiences during the early days of World War II were unmatched by any other civil organization, but there was no time to dwell on them.
With the entrance of the United States into the war, virtually all of Pan
Am's equipment and personnel were assigned, directly or indirectly, to the war effort. Pan Am, the nation's only overseas airline, had a very
special responsibility and it called on its 9,000 employees to respond.
They rose to the challenge.
Pan Am's pilots and navigators were called in to advise the military on
the techniques of overseas flying and to start training crews. At the Pan
Am Navigational School near Miami, General Jimmy Doolittle's navigators
trained for his bombing raid. At Pan Am bases, many departments started
working around the clock. Doubling and tripling of maintenance personnel resulted in a 50 percent cut in servicing time and a 100 percent increase in aircraft utilization..
Most Clippers flew twice as many hours, twice as often as they had in
peacetime. The plush interiors of the B-314 flying boats were stripped to
wartime austerity and priority cargo was packed into every available inch
of space. The exteriors were camouflaged by painting them with drab
sea-gray paint. The Pan Am crews now wore khaki when under Army command and green when flying for the Navy.
During the first year of the war records were shattered and re-shattered.
Feats that would have been considered miraculous in normal times were now
all in a day's work. In 1942 Pan Am Clippers made 1,219 Atlantic
crossings. The amount of cargo carried increased sharply from 16,500
pounds in 1941 to over three million pounds in 1942!
It seemed that transatlantic flight crews were in the air more than they
were on the ground.
Captain H. E. Gray, who was to serve as president of Pan Am in the 1960's,
made nine crossings in nine days. Pan Am pilot Joe Hart made 12 in 13
days. Captain R. O. D. Sullivan made a total of 103 crossings of the
Atlantic in 1942. When he became the first person in history to make a
hundred aerial crossings, he wasn't even aware of it. Bringing his
oil-stained, camouflaged Clipper down on Long Island Sound, he had to be
told of his achievement by Pan Am's ground personnel. Asked to describe
his feelings at reaching this aviation milestone he answered, "Well, I do
feel a little hungry."
Although the Japanese had taken over all of its Central Pacific bases
except Honolulu, Pan Am nevertheless continued to be active in Asia. Pan Am's affiliate on the mainland of China, the China National Aviation
Corporation, made a heroic evacuation of some 275 U.S., British and
Chinese civilians from Hong Kong, accomplished by pilots and ground crews working without rest for 72 straight hours. In April, 1942, Pan Am played a key role in evacuating more than 4,000 civilians and wounded soldiers from Burma, at the same time flying in supplies for the forces struggling to hold back the Japanese invaders-much of it accomplished in violent monsoon weather and under constant threats from enemy aircraft.
To expedite shipments to the Asian and African war zones, Pan Am formed a new Africa-Orient Division. Its exploits are legendary. The famous "Cannonball" route was established; stretching 11,500 miles from Miami to South America, across the Atlantic to Africa and from there to India, it was the longest, fastest, big-scale air transport route in history and an important supply line for the entire Far East. At its peak, seven flights a day in each direction were being scheduled, and one day there were 16 Pan Am-operated C-54 transport planes over the ocean at the same time.
This steady flow of arms, ammunition and supplies was later given a large
share of the credit for driving the Japanese out of Burma.
The Africa-Orient Division also flew supplies to China over the Himalayas,
a route known as the "Hump", one of the wildest, most rugged areas on
earth with the high mountain peaks and almost constantly turbulent
weather. Frequently planes were forced to struggle up to 20,000 feet to
clear the peaks, sometimes without oxygen for the crew, often fighting
100-mph winds. Violent updrafts and down-drafts tossed planes around like leaves. Ice was severe. The ever-present enemy fighters also took their toll. One Pan Am plane came back with over 3,000 bullet holes. For three years the flights over the "Hump" were the sole source of U.S. and other outside help to otherwise-isolated China.
In addition to its regular flights across the Atlantic and the Pacific,
and into Africa and the Orient, Pan Am allocated aircraft to special,
often secret, missions. A Pan Am B-314 flew President Roosevelt and his
advisors to the summit conference at Casablanca. Franklin Roosevelt
celebrated his sixty-first birthday aboard the Dixie Clipper on January
30th, 1943 while over the Caribbean, on his return trip from his secret
meeting in Casablanca with Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle.
Other Pan Am aircraft carried top U.S. generals and admirals, Britain's
Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the Netherlands Queen Wilhelmina,
Greece's King George and scores of other high-ranking diplomats and
military men. Pan Am flew more than 700 of these special missions.
Although there were many acts of heroism and moments of high drama, Pan Am's major contribution throughout the war was doing what it had learned to do so expertly in peacetime: the building and outfitting of overseas air bases and the fast, dependable transportation of people and cargo over long distances.
During the war years Pan Am built some 50 airports in 15 different
countries, almost all of them in remote, often hostile areas. As the
largest air transport contractor to the army and the navy, Pan Am flew
over 90 million aircraft miles for the government and made more than
18,000 ocean crossings.
An advertising illustration from the Saturday Evening Post, November 22,
1941, shows workers unloading much-needed engines for use on military
planes. In the first years of the war, before the operation was taken
over by the U.S. Air Transport Command, it ferried 542 bombers and
transports to the war zones. Pan Am also trained more then 5,000 military
pilots and thousands of mechanics, and established schools and procedures for the training of many more thousands.
And Pan Am paid the price: more then 200 employees gave their lives, an
unknown number were imprisoned in enemy prison camps, at least a dozen aircraft were lost.
Not many people know about Pan Am's role in World War II...there was
almost no publicity. There were no medals, no glory. It was all done in
the line of duty. Pan Am's Herculean efforts to keep supply lines open
throughout the world was one of America's most valuable secret weapons. When the war ended, Pan Am could look back with pride on a job well done.
Its unique experience, gained during years of pioneering air
transportation in Latin America and across the Atlantic and Pacific, had
been the basis for the country's entire wartime international transport
operations and significantly influenced the war's outcome.
And yet today Pan Am is gone!!

National Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Both holidays were established to recognize and honor the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. But Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday in May, was originally set aside as a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, which is observed on November 11, Veterans Day is intended to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living Veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

While in Canada they celebrate Remembrance Day:

Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a Commonwealth holiday (observed in all Commonwealth countries except Mozambique) to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918 (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice).

WHO: The Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum

WHAT: is sponsoring an Open Cockpit Day with the C-47 "Sky Train/DAKOTA" World War II military transport aircraft.

WHERE: at the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum located on the grounds of the Pueblo Memorial Airport (PUB). The museum is located 6 miles east of Pueblo Colorado on US Highway 96/US Highway 50 East.

WHEN: 13 November 2010 from 10 AM to 4 PM.

COST: $7 for persons aged 10 years of age and over. Active duty military admitted free with valid military ID. There is no additional cost to sit in the cockpit of the aircraft.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The C-47 was one of the most widely used transport aircraft of World War II and was extensively used by air forces around the world.

Hello All,

I just wanted to pass along to you that we are hosting a 75^th celebration of the Roll out of the DC-3

at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos CA
on the Dec 17/18.

We had our DC-3 (97H) at the Last Time at Rock Falls (greatest event ever!) and we wanted to do something here at the museum.

Our event will be a much smaller scale but we have 2 Dc-3’s, A C-41 and a C-47 participating in the event. Plus singers, presenters, antique cars etc…

In 1944, 2nd Lt. Baker was sent to Italy with a full platoon of 54 men. On April 5, he and his soldiers found themselves behind enemy lines near Viareggio, Italy. When concentrated enemy fire from several machine gun emplacements stopped his company's advance, Baker crawled to one and destroyed it, killing three Germans. Continuing forward, he attacked an enemy observation post and killed two occupants.

With the aid of one of his men, Baker attacked two more machine gun nests, killing or wounding the four enemy soldiers occupying these positions. Then he covered the evacuation of his wounded soldiers by occupying an exposed position and drawing the enemy's fire.

On the following night, Baker voluntarily led a battalion advance through enemy mine fields and heavy fire.

In all, Baker and his platoon killed 26 Enemy combatants and destroyed six machine gun nests, two observer posts and four dugouts.

CELEBRATE THE DC-3/C47 AT AIRVENTURE LUNCHEON
Was your first airplane ride on a DC-3? Were you a pilot or flight attendant on a DC-3? Did you have a military experience on a C-47? If so, please join us for lunch and share your memories and experiences. A DC-3 Reunion lunch is planned for Wednesday, July 28, in the Founders' Wing of the AirVenture Museum, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

EAA is inviting everyone that has a historic connection to the DC-3/C-47 to attend. It will be a time for everyone who is passionate about the DC-3/C-47 to get together and celebrate the legacy of a legendary aircraft. James Douglas, son of Donald W. Douglas Sr, the founder of Douglas Aircraft Co., will be in attendance, as will numerous crews of visiting DC-3s. Timeless Voices of Aviation volunteers will also be on hand to create archival recordings of people's memories.

The lunch is free but space is limited so you must make a reservation either by e-mail to AirVenture Oshkosh Convention Office or by calling 920-426-6823.

Among the activities already scheduled as part of the DC-3 75th anniversary celebration at Oshkosh are:

A very special DC-3 / C-47 reunion evening at Theater in the Woods, hosted by David Hartman;
“Salute to Veterans” activities in cooperation with Disabled American Veterans (DAV) to include re-enactor displays and personal appearances by WWII veterans of “Easy Company” (known from the HBO series “Band of Brothers”);
Air Show programs throughout the week to include a parade of classic airliners; a unique heritage flight that pairs the C-47 with the modern C-17 Globemaster; and static jumps from a pair of C-47s by the Liberty Jump Team, using WWII-style round canopy parachutes;
An appearance by the aircraft and stars of hit Canadian reality TV series “Ice Pilots”, still operating the DC-3 in daily passenger service;
DC-3 movie screenings, including the John Wayne classic “Island in the Sky” at the outdoor Fly-In Movie Theater;
Numerous public forums related to the people, history and operations of the DC-3;
A major week-long effort by the EAA Timeless Voices of Aviation team to capture and preserve the video oral histories of all people connected with the DC-3.

Nearly 67 years ago, Tech. Sgt. Leonard A. Gionet, had ducked into the Army green radio room of a Boeing B-17. He sat on a worn green chair in the World War II-era bomber, the sun filtering in through an open window.. From a small chair bolted to the plane's plywood floor, he manned the radio, World War II raging outside the curved walls.
His plane, nicknamed "Naughty but Nice" and sporting a scantily clad woman painted on its side, never made it out of the war. Shot down by a Japanese pilot, it crashed into the thick forests of Papua New Guinea. On June 26, 1943, Leonard A. Gionet left behind a new bride and 6-month-old son Leonard, who would spend a lifetime piecing together memories.
Growing up, the younger Gionet, now 67, had only his mom's stories and a large chest of memorabilia to fill in the gaps. But it wasn't until a surprising phone call two weeks ago from the Army's casualty affairs center that he ever felt a hint of closure.
After 66 years, his father's missing remains had been identified. Years of investigation and forensic testing meant Leonard A. Gionet would finally receive a proper military funeral and burial.

Change of Plans for Mass DC-3 flight

The Last Time organization will not arrive at EAA AirVenture this year as a mass formation of Douglas DC-3 aircraft,
EAA officials have indicated. Instead, an EAA-organized mass formation called Max Effort will take place July 27.
(AirVenture runs from July 26 to Aug. 1.)

The Last Time celebration will continue and will include a mass formation at Whiteside County Airport in Rock Falls, Ill.
After the celebration is complete, it is hoped many of the participating aircraft will individually fly to Oshkosh.
An EAA official said they have confirmations from many DC-3 operators, including those not attending the Rock Falls celebration, who will attend AirVenture this year.

It is the seventy-fifth anniversary of the DC-3.

The latest addition is a DC-3 and C-47 "Max-Effort Day" on Tuesday, July 27, that will include formation flights and aerial displays from all DC-3 aircraft that wish to be flown that day. Pennsylvania Pilot John Hicks celebrated his 100th birthday this week and reminisced about his historic flight in a one-passenger Aeronca C-2 plane from New York to Los Angeles in 1936. Hicks, who was denied flight training because one leg was shorter than the other, taught himself to fly by studying manuals. "I read everything I could possibly read about planes," said Hicks.

Congress to award female pilots in WWII WASP program
Congress plans to award about 180 members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots with the Congressional Gold Medal today. The female pilots transported military personnel and flew other non-combat missions during World War II. The WASP pilots served at 120 Army Air Bases in the U.S. until 1944 but did not receive partial veterans benefits until 1977.

A barnstormer from the 1920s, Grant flew the DC-3 given to King Abdulaziz by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in February 1945 and was instrumental in helping to develop relations between the US and Saudi governments during World War II. Grant was at AirVenture last year, appearing at a special AeroShell Square ceremony with the grandsons of FDR and King Abdulaziz. My first flight by DC-3

I love a lot DC-3 aircraft.
I am a Brazilian, now 72 years old, I had my first flight by the DC-3 plane of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB-Força Aérea Brasileira) "Correio Aéreo Nacional -CAN" ( National Air Mail ). It was free; Otherwise to me it was then impossible to travel by plane.
I remember the first time, a long time ago,. the trip was from Petrolina, Pernambuco, where I was born, to Fortaleza, capital city of Ceará state. We were ready on the runway to begin the flight, than the aircraft went back to the airport terminal and one began to fix the engine .
We waited a long time to repair the machine an then we went into the beautiful DC-3 and go ahead in a so happy voyage.
One of the most beautiful thing of DC-3 was the position of its wheels: two at front and one behind, just contrary to present day aircrafts.
What a memory from the DC-3!

We heard from Martin Ireland:

Last week I returned from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and took off from a tiny dirt airstrip by Ngaruroro crater in a DHC-6 Twin Otter to Kilimanjaro Airport. When I arrived, I saw a DC-3 taxiing onto the apron in front.

When I asked our pilot she informed me that there were a couple Dakotas still knocking around, used by Safari rangers to transport big cats to vets and sometimes for the Flying Doctor Services to airstrips servicing Masai villages.

I think it was originally donated by the Australian Flying Doctor Service and, due to the dry climate and simplicity of the DC-3, is still operational on a regular basis.

'Regional Air Service' (RAS), a civil derivative of the military 'Regional Air Transport' (RAT), operating out of Kilimanjaro Airport inherited all sorts of elderly planes, including DC-3's from Uganda when Idi Amin's regime collapsed. Many of these are still flying. There's also a Lockheed Electra parked on the apron at Nairobi's regional airport too.

Between 1942 and 1944, 1,074 women earned their wings as WASP. Collectively, they logged more than 60 million miles, flying essential non-combat military missions so that their male counterparts could be deployed to combat. They towed targets for air and ground gunnery practice, tested new and refurbished planes, ferried the military's biggest bombers and fastest fighters, transported personnel and cargo, and trained navigators and bombardiers on the ground.
The WASP were never awarded full military status and were ineligible for officer status. Following the war, the women pilots paid their own way home. And for the 38 women who died in the line of duty, their families were saddled with the costs to transport their bodies and arrange burials. It was not until 1977 that the WASP were at last granted veterans' status.

A great book about DC-3 operations by a friend and DC-3 fan.

About the Author:
Born and raised in a small town in northern California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, he started flying during WW II and at age 19 became a B- 17 Flying Fortress pilot.
After the war he found work flying for nonscheduled airlines
until called back to active duty in the Air Force to fly C-54’s on the Berlin Airlift.
At the outbreak of the Korean War it was off to fly C-47’s and C-54’s in the Combat Cargo Command until his return to civilian life in 1953 and returning to civil air carriers, finishing his commercial piloting career as personal pilot
to the president of a major US corporation based in San Francisco in 1990.
The author and his wife, Genevieve, have made their home in the US Pacific Northwest.

Ozark Airlines hosted a live museum with a 1941 Douglas C-47, a military version of the passenger DC-3. The camouflage-colored aircraft named "Judy," for its owner, has a wingspan of 95 feet.

ItsTime for Oshkosh again.

I received a call asking me if I could fly down to Texas … I said yes and asked what was up… The reply, “It’s a secret” …I said OK,and checked my Itinerary on my computer… with the obvious curiosity, I tried to figure out what the event might be… but none rang true… then I received another call asking if I had a sleeping bag and a tent,,, because we would be sleeping out on the ground… suddenly I realized that it was the last of July …meaning that Oshkosh was about to start… I knew better then to get my hopes up because I had been trying to get to Oshkosh for the Biggest Fly-in, in the world for the last 12 years…

…so I packed my new sleeping bag and my tent and headed to PDX … I soared across the US to Denver then on to Houston … When I arrived and was met in Houston …They asked me if I had figured the secret yet… I told him Yes …I think its Oshkosh… They laughed and said they were sure that the sleeping bag comments would let me know what it was… and we all knew that it was still tentative based on business and weather…

Then it was take-off time for Oshkosh … When we arrived … It was overwhelming to see the thousands of aircraft of every make and model …DC-3s and C-47s lined up in a row… Warbirds standing proudly …antiques. some being the only example left in the world… on display for all to enjoy…and the countless number of other aircraft that were spread in every direction with colorful tents and awnings in their shadows… a wondrous sight indeed… as we went to register for the several days that we would be there … the sheer pleasure of hearing and seeing various groups and individuals talking aviation and sharing where they were from and "what did you fly in with"… it was great….

Basler Flight Services provided our aircraft tie down and camping area as well as transportation that would take us to the main show area.
Then it was "off to the show" We started looking at the various Show sections … The entire operation was well organized and efficient…the show used John Deere tractors to pull the passenger carts and they would take you to a section of the show …and you could ride these then board another and in this way get to where you wanted to get to in the show grounds… the venders had various area tents and show areas and the main exhibition areas were crammed with various product representatives… all extremely well organized… in yet another area they had great exhibition tents for the various seminars with everything from how to rebuild engines to several areas that build a complete homebuilt aircraft in the week of the show… with areas to encourage youngsters to gain an interest in this type of building… The food courts were well placed and although expensive they did their job of feeding the mass…

The following day we decided to make a trip if possible to see the conversion plant of Basler’s fantastic DC-3 conversion to turbo-prop engines and increased pay load and fuel capacity the “The BT-67”… at first contact we were told that Basler no longer gives tours during the air show… But the DC-3 museum was invited to join a Australian tour that would begin in about an hour if we could get there… We grabbed a cab and soon were at their office… When the “Ozzies” arrived we began the tour… we started our tour with a short movie telling about the company and then a look out of second story observation windows at the hanger operations below. It is a very neat and orderly operation… the “Ozzies” were being treated to a “hands on, touchy feely” tour and there we were, right in the middle of it all…
The Quality of workmanship At Basler is really outstanding and although we were not allowed to take pictures inside because one of the aircraft being worked on was a state department project, and others were being set up for Foreign heads of state…and we honored the secrecy required… it was the highlight of the trip for me…

If you are able and are a fan of Aviation …I would highly recommend that you attend OSHKOSH… and also support EAA and AOPA…These are the people who are fighting to save our rights in General Aviation to fly...

Mechanicsburg, PA man gets distinguished Flying Cross.

Grady Miller made it a personal policy never to count the bullet holes in his aircraft on returning to base.
“I was in the habit of forgetting every mission,” the Mechanicsburg man said Tuesday. “You tried to dispense it from your mind. Otherwise, you would go crazy.”
But the memories flowed back for the 81-year-old retired captain who received a Distinguished Flying Cross — second only to the Medal of Honor as the highest award for bravery bestowed on Air Force personnel.
Friends, family and current military came together at the LeTort View Community Center to honor the Korean War veteran who survived 144 combat missions.
Col. Rod Zastrow, senior Air Force service representative, presented the award to Miller who flew C-47 transport planes behind enemy lines in the face of intense enemy fire.

If you are already multi, you can fly the DC-3.

Actually, we are looking for ANY pilots to fly the DC-3.

Low time single engine folks still get to fly it.

If you are already Multi and SIC typed, you can upgrade to the ATP and/or PIC

Yank's Air Museum at Chino California
will begin the restoration of C-47-A N-60480 s/n 42-23668
starting in June 2008

The first part of the restoration will be painting the aircraft in D day Invasion colors.

The Warbird Sqd 16 members volunteer at Yanks Air Museum.
This group is known as Yank's Sixteeners.
We gather at Yank's on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 1:00pm

We have just received great news from Alistair Lamb, at Essendon Airport, Melbourne, Australia:

“I have just bought a beautiful DC-3 1945 (C-47) TT 13000Hrs approx.,

The Aircraft was fully restored By Mr. Bob Fisher. (who did a wonderful Job)… Mr Fisher Mounted a Camera in the nose and there are displays that service every seat.

The Aircraft is VH-TMQ and will operate out of Essendon Airport, Melbourne, Australia.

The Company is called “Gooney Bird Pty Ltd" and hopefully will begin operations in July of 2009."

We at the museum have been undergoing many modifications and updates... This has been a very long and technical process... when we first began every thing was done free and easy and the only desire was to provide a informative source for all things DC-3... But as time progressed technology and those who choose to abuse the simplicity of others,,,reared its head... and as our systems became dated they also became easy to "spam" ...We called on our friends at Centerline Computers to provide an updated content management system and Forum... They are working hard and donating thier time and expertise to bring us up to today's standards... our sincere thanks for their time and efforts...
